Boreal Astarte

Astarte borealis (Schumacher, 1817)

Other Name: Boreal tridonta.

Description: Shell exteriors are white, covered in a fibrous olive-brown to black periostracum. Shell interiors are white. The oval to orbicular shells feature several concentric ribs that are most pronounced mid-shell. The shells bear a hinge with thick teeth and the umbones are small, central and bent forward.

Size: Shells to 2.2″ (5.5 cm) long.

Habitat: In sand, mud or gravel; low intertidal zone to depths of 600′ (183 m).

Range: Circumboreal; Arctic to north-central British Columbia; the Bering Sea; Arctic to Massachusetts; Norway and Denmark.

Notes: Shells of the boreal astarte are a relatively common find in southeast Alaska on muddy shorelines. The valves of this species vary considerably in their appearance and proportions.
